Just like BSD and SysVR4 have spawned various flavours of Unix, Linux is heading towards the same direction. It has not helped Unix against the evil Redmond monopoly and who knows if it will help spread Linux on the Desktop. Anyway - for now we have to live with the different Linux incarnations which can be broadly categorised into 3 main branches: RPM-based systems such as RedHat/Fedora and SLES/OpenSuSE, deb-based distributions such as Debian itself and (K)Ubuntu as well as Gentoo, the purists approach to Linux. This section contains distribution specific information that did not fit into the general category.
